Drive to Kilimanjaro National Park Machame Gate. The journey from Moshi takes about 45 minutes. Pass through the village of Machame, situated on the lower slopes of the mountain. Depart from the park gate and begin the hike through the rainforest on a winding trail up a ridge. Expect muddy and slippery conditions at lower elevations, so gaiters and trekking poles are recommended. Reach Machame Camp after hiking for approximately 5-6 hours.
After breakfast, leave the rainforest behind and ascend on an ascending path, crossing a valley along a steep rocky ridge. Turn west onto a river gorge until reaching the Shira campsite.
Depart from Shira Plateau, continuing east up a ridge. Pass by the junction toward the peak of Kibo and head southeast toward Lava Tower (elevation: 4650m/15,250ft). Descend to Barranco Camp, an essential day for acclimatization.
Leave Barranco Camp and ascend the steep ridge of the Barranco Wall. Traverse through the Karanga Valley to the junction connecting with the Mweka Trail. Continue up to Barafu Camp, where you have completed the South Circuit and camp with views of the summit.
Start the ascent to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers early in the morning (midnight to 2 am). Reach Stella Point on the crater rim, then continue to Uhuru Peak. Descend straight to Mweka Camp after reaching the summit, stopping at Barafu for lunch.
Descend to Mweka Park Gate to receive summit certificates. Gaiters and trekking poles are recommended for wet and muddy conditions at lower elevations. The vehicle will be waiting at Mweka Gate to drive back to your hotel in Moshi (about 30 minutes).
