The drive from Moshi, the nearest town where you will be picked up, to Machame Gate takes about 45 minutes. The journey passes through the village of Machame, situated on the lower slopes of the mountain.
We depart from the park gate and hike through the rainforest on a winding trail up a ridge. The trail can be muddy and slippery at lower elevations. Gaiters and trekking poles are recommended. We continue for a short distance until reaching Machame Camp.
After breakfast, we depart from the rainforest and ascend on a path, crossing the valley along a steep rocky ridge. The route turns west onto a river gorge until reaching the Shira campsite.
From the Shira Plateau, we continue east up a ridge, passing the junction toward the peak of Kibo. Our direction changes to the Southeast towards the Lava Tower, known as the “Shark’s Tooth” (elevation 4650m/15,250ft). After the tower, we reach the junction leading to the Arrow Glacier. We then descend to Barranco Camp. Although you end the day around the same elevation as the start, this day aids in acclimatization for the summit.
After breakfast, we leave Barranco and ascend a steep ridge up the Barranco Wall (elevation 4250m/13,900ft), through the Karanga Valley (elevation 4050m/13,250ft) to the junction connecting with the Mweka Trail. We climb this non-technical but steep, approximately 900 ft cliff. From the top of Barranco Wall, we cross hills and valleys until descending sharply into Karanga Valley. Another ascent leads to Karanga Camp. This shorter day aids in acclimatization.
We leave Karanga and reach the junction connecting with the Mweka Trail. We ascend to Barafu Hut through a rocky section. At this point, the Southern Circuit is completed, offering views of the summit from various angles. We make camp at Barafu, rest, and enjoy an early dinner to prepare for summit day. Mawenzi and Kibo peaks are visible from here.
Very early in the morning (midnight to 2 am), we proceed to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. We ascend in a northwest direction through heavy scree toward Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most challenging part of the trek. At Stella Point, a short rest rewards us with a magnificent sunrise. Faster hikers may see the sunrise from the summit. From Stella Point, snow may be encountered all the way to the summit. Once at Uhuru Peak, the highest point of Africa is reached, marking the summit of Kilimanjaro. We begin the descent straight down to Mweka Camp, stopping at Barafu for lunch. Gaiters and trekking poles may be needed for the loose gravel. We arrive at Mweka Camp for our last evening on the mountain.
After breakfast, we continue the descent to the Mweka Park Gate to receive summit certificates. At lower elevations, it may be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts may suffice (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy). Your vehicle will be waiting at Mweka Gate to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi, marking the end of the Kilimanjaro Climb Machame Route with King Of Kilimanjaro Expedition.
