You will be picked up at your hotel around 08:00 am and transferred to the Lemosho gate on the western side of Kilimanjaro. After completing the registration process, we will commence our climb steadily through the forests of the Lemosho glades until we reach Big Tree Camp, where we will spend the night.
Today's journey covers significant ground as we trek across a plateau of grassy moorland and scattered heather, adorned with volcanic rock formations. Passing through Shira 1 Camp, we may catch glimpses of Kibo Peak amidst the clouds as we head towards our destination, Shira 2 Camp. The route involves a reasonable altitude gain, offering panoramic views of the Northern Ice fields and unique perspectives of Kibo. Our steady ascent across the moorland aids in acclimatization while treating us to magnificent panoramic vistas.
Our trek begins with an ascent, providing expansive panoramic views as we enter the upland desert climatic zone and traverse lava ridges beneath the glaciers of the Western Breach. We reach the distinctive pinnacle of the Lava Tower (4640 m), our high point for the day and an ideal spot for lunch. Following a steep descent, we arrive at our camp nestled at the base of the Great Barranco Valley (3960 m), offering shelter amidst towering cliffs and sweeping views of the plains below.
We commence the day by descending into the Great Barranco, a vast ravine, before ascending steeply up the Great Barranco Wall, separating us from the southeastern slopes of Kibo. Passing underneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers, we proceed towards the Karanga valley. After a challenging climb, we reach Karanga Camp, set at 3963m. For those feeling strong, a mid-afternoon acclimatization trek up to around 4200m is an option before returning to camp for the night.
Following a restful night and breakfast, we embark on our trek to Barafu camp at 4640m. The climb traverses desolate scree slopes devoid of vegetation, presenting a challenging ascent exacerbated by the altitude. Upon reaching camp, we rest and prepare for the arduous ascent ahead. Hydration and warmth are crucial, and after an early dinner, we attempt to rest before the midnight start for the summit.
Commencing around midnight, we ascend steeply towards the summit glaciers, climbing scree for 4 to 5 hours to gain remarkable height over a short distance. The sunrise at Stella Point (5739m) is breathtaking, with stunning views of ice cliffs and jagged peaks. Another hour's walk brings us to the summit, Uhuru Peak (5895m). Descending via Stella Point, we return to Barafu Camp for breakfast before continuing to Millennium Camp for a well-earned rest.
A leisurely descent through the rainforest takes us to Mweka Gate, where park formalities are completed, and certificates are awarded. Vehicles await to transport us back to the hotel in Moshi, where a refreshing shower awaits.
